Typically, this information will contain the person's name, birthdate, marriage date and other information that pertains to that individual. This is the primary goal of genealogy, collect, disseminate and verify the veracity of information to build a profile of relatives that you may or may not have known using research tools.  What is a password?

ANSWER:
A password is the members personal key to a opening up access to a very large cache of documents, files, media, photos, videos, recordings and other historic information. Passwords are part of a process to ensure that only authenticated individuals access computers that they are authorized to use. Passwords also help to determine accountability for all transactions and other changes made to system resources, including data. Sharing a password used for any of our family members is a violation of the Terms and Conditions. In cases where members’ share their password with any third party, member will be held responsible for their actions and their account terminated.

 Password Policy
The THREE C's of Passwords Member is accountable for the CHOICE, CONFIDENTIALITY and CHANGING (CCC) of passwords required for authentication purposes and bad passwords jeopardize information that they are supposed to protect while good passwords do not. A good password should be relatively easy to remember but very difficult for somebody else to guess. Listed below are some examples of creating good passwords.
 Password Housekeeping
Passwords should be changed every 30 – 60 days. Do not re-use old passwords for a period of 6 months. Passwords should not easily identify the person using it. Passwords must be kept from prying eyes. Password Construction and Strength Anytime a weak or easy password is used, it can also be easily cracked. Using a word from the dictionary or a common series of numbers like 123456 is bad for business and puts the entire system at risk. Therefore, strong passwords are required when utilizing the website genealogy. Create a password that is easy to remember using the following guidelines.

  • IMPORTANT: The most important attribute of a strong password is length! By making a password as long as you can such as 16 characters, it becomes extremely difficult to crack.
  • A different password should only be used for one (1) account that a member utilizes and the same password should not be used across multiple accounts.
  • Passwords should contain at least 6-8 characters but 8 is better using a combination with numbers, letters and symbols. Example: 15cdJL7#$%m
  • Passwords should contain a combination of at least 5 uppercase letters (e.g. U) and lowercase letters (e.g. m).
  • Passwords should contain at least 2 numerical characters (e.g. 2, 9 or 3, 5).
  • Passwords should contain at least 1 special characters (e.g. $, %, #, &, etc).
  • A new password should never resemble the old password that it is replacing.
  • Passwords should never be the same as the Username/LogonID
  • Passwords should not be based on members’ personal information such as name, Social Security Number, address, phone number, date of birth, spouse name, children or pets. friends, family members, geographic location or any permutations thereof.
  • Passwords should not be based on members’ business information such as name, tax ID number, address, phone number, etc.
  • Passwords should not be common words that can be found in a standard dictionary (English or foreign) or that are publicly known slang or jargon.
  • Passwords should not be trivial, predictable or obvious like God, IAMGOD, etc.
  • Passwords should not be based on publicly known fictional characters from books, films, or that can be spelled out into a name.
 Creating Good Passwords
1. Create a password using an acronym based on a nursery rhyme, song, book, poem, movie, or a sentence.

Examples:

  • WYe11S0b$ = We all live in a yellow submarine
  • lD&1n$39 = Lonely Days and Lonely Nights
  • W@m1@W23 = When a man loves a women
  • T0$G0&59 = Top Gun
  • 2. Combine nonsense words that mean something to member but not to anybody else. Combine the first syllables of the two words but do not use abbreviations.

    Example:

  • C@bReM6$ = Cabinet Remote
  • 3. Drop vowels or drop the first few letters of a long word.

    Examples:

  • STRswe4% = Street Sweeper
  • PIOnSH1& = Championship
  • Bth$Tb45 = Bath Tub
  • 4. Use special characters like #, $, and @ to replace vowels.

    Example:

  • Pr#p@r39 = Preparation
  • 5. Misspell a word, drop a couple of letters or add some.

    Examples:

  • GUal1f# = Qualify
  • SPp2c#2L = Special
  • EL1#pE@r2 = Elephant Ear
  • 6. Easy ways to remember passwords is to be creative and choose something that has some meaning to the member and hard for people that know you to guess. Think of using terms that relate to an upcoming vacation or event or one of your childrens events.

    Example:

  • C@r1b+Cr = Caribbean Cruise
  • 7. Try using your 2nd cousin, twice removed, comes to visit you.

    Example:

  • 2&dC0ZZ$
  • 8. The absolutely best password is the one that uses a random combination of letters, numeric and special characters.

    Example:

  • 23Vv9$f@
  •  Password SafeKeeping
Keep password safe and do not give it to anyone and never assume you need to give a password to anyone for any reason.

Members who knowingly give their password for access to the McMullen Family History and Genealogy to any other person for any reason, are violating our policies and their access may be temporarily or permanently revoked or a loss of elevated privileges.

  • Passwords should be treated as confidential information. No member is to share, give or even hint at their password to any other person, for any reason.
  • If someone asks for or demands members password, refer them to this policy.
  • Members passwords should never be transmitted electronically over the unprotected Internet, such as via e-mail.
  • Members should never keep an unsecured written record of their password unless it is stored in a secure password program such as 1password or placed under lock and key in controlled access.
  • Do not use the "Remember Password" feature of applications and do not create a "hot key" for password use.
  • Never re-use the same password to access multiple company systems.
  • Passwords used to gain access to company sensitive systems should not be re-used as passwords to access non-company accounts or information.
  • In the event a member, either knows or suspects that their password has been compromised, it must be reported to the OurLife.us administrators immediately.
  • Do not use any of the password examples shown in this document.
  •  Password & Sticky Notes
Never write your password down on a sticky note and paste it to the bottom of your keyboard where people can see it and do not disclose your account credentials to anyone or any third party for any reason. OurLife keeps access and security logs of all transactions related to Services.

However, if at any time you notice that a living person's name is revealed, please contact us immediately and will will rectify the situation immediately.
Note: A family member who has access rights to login into this website will only be able to view living individuals that are available in their branch of the family tree.
